SFA invests
in the ongoing success of its member companies by sponsoring
research on topics from how to grow a better
potato to how to communicate more effectively with consumers.
Examples
of recent SFA research include:
Potato Research
SFA annually underwrites basic research at
several major universities to develop potato cultivars
with the
objective of creating a
potato that can be chipped directly out of cold storage.
This research enhances knowledge and improves chip
manufacturers' efforts to handle potatoes more efficiently.
SFA also funds university research that evaluates promising
new cultivars to determine their adaptability and
suitability for grower production and chip processing quality.
Since the trials were initiated in 1985, numerous new chipping
potato
varieties have been identified, including the Snowden
potato,one of the
most popular chipping potatoes in use today.
Allergen
Labeling
SFA co-sponsored a series of consumer focus groups
to test the most effective way to label snack products
in order
to inform consumers about the presence of common allergens,
such as peanuts, in snack products. The resulting research
report was made available to all SFA members.
Sodium Research
SFA has helped to bring the latest health
information about sodium to the attention of the government
panel responsible
for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. SFA co-sponsored
research to develop an updated assessment of the scientific
literature related to sodium and blood pressure.
"SFA's
ongoing research programs, such as the potato research
keep Utz on the cutting-edge of
snack food industry technology issues."
